(Who hasn't said that before?) So far I have done pretty well and instead of buying, I 'pet' the fabrics. I also decided to use the miscellaneous fabrics I have collected in some kind of project. This pile of shreds were once attached to a donation of such fabrics.
My kitchen is 98% done. There is one piece of paneling to apply to the side of the pantry and I have to get handles and pulls for the doors and drawers. I have found a home for most of the 'stuff' I held on to and I have been brushing up on my cooking skills. I will post a picture later.

In this post, I want to give a preview of the piece I entered in the DAFA fiber show benefiting the Alzheimer's Association, Dallas Chapter. It is a holographic piece using a photo I took in Israel last year. It is titled 'Finding My Way Home'.

The pantry was a big surprise - more expired food than I realized. When I think about it, in my head I have always wanted to make sure I had 'enough' to make it through tough times. I found a few cans of soup that expired unopened, but most of the expired food had been opened, used and stored - bags of corn meal, flour, chocolate chips, marshmallows, larger than life bottles of Sriracha Rooster Sauce - all of the things you need just a bit of. I will figure this out
Thirty two and counting! That is the number of boxes packed, taped and in the storage unit - yeah!!!
Almost done.
On the other hand, I got up at 4:45 to exercise. I started a boot camp this morning from 5:30 - 6:30. It was assessment day so we were doing things I hope we never do again. My arms and shoulders are still shaking and I wonder whether I will be able to finish packing and moving boxes. Burpies - I hate you, planks - ugh! There were 5 of us and I have to say I lead the pack in snorting and grunting.

Back to packing - I wonder, do I have to unload the fridge - shit!!Dreamerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01836670338383995558noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6707542015498873797.post-55723805206425269062013-04-23T15:08:00.001-05:002013-04-23T15:08:33.944-05:00I am not a hoarder, I am not a horder, I am NOT a hoarder..., DAFA and misc.So much to talk about...
Today marks the beginning of purging the kitchen cabinets of my 'stuff' in preparation for the upcoming remodel. So far during the brief period of time I have spent sorting (15 minutes), I have one partially filled box of stuff to keep, one partially filled bag to donate to a garage sale and a mostly filled recycle bag. This is one daunting task but the demolishers will be here on Monday and they must have something to demolish. So far I am not feeling overwhelmed - it's only Tuesday, let's see how I feel on Friday.
As I look around my home, at all of this stuff (I cannot even say my stuff because it is just stuff), I wonder where I will store the filled boxes. My guest room is filled with bins of fabric and book cases (mind you, none of which I am ready to part with), my garage is full of garage stuff, even my room has its share of clothes that must find their way to coat hangers.
Maybe, this will be the year I truly shed all of the baggage and things that I am hanging on to, maybe...
Verizon - what can I say but %$#@! How many times must I call for them to get it right? I always connect to what seems like an intelligent, well meaning customer service rep; they seem to understand my request, yet the follow-up emails are wrong. I will have patience and wait the full billing cycle to see if they get it right this time.
DAFA - last night was the closing reception for the members' annual show. What a fun evening! Check out the gallery section on the DAFA website.
I also sold my very first piece! This wonderful lady fell in love with 'Sunrise over Galilee' while it was hanging as the preview piece. She told me she recognized the view and wanted to add it to her collection. She hunted me down the day we hung the show and last night we delivered it to her. She took my daughter and I on a tour of her apartment and all I have to say is wow! This woman has been around the world and has a collection of beautiful fine art. She has a fabulous collection of religious icons, oil paintings, cork carvings, embroidery and other beautiful work. Everywhere you look, there is a feast for the eyes. She showed us where she will hang my piece and I am in great company - truly humbled that she wants to add my piece to her collection.Dreamerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01836670338383995558noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6707542015498873797.post-60015898397628868942013-04-14T00:39:00.005-05:002013-04-14T00:39:54.888-05:00Ice, Ice BabyThis morning I made made my first attempt at parfait ice dyeing. I can't find the color I am looking for in the stacks of fabric sequestered in drawers, bins and bags throughout my house so I decided to create it myself. (Of course this is bull#$%@ because I never looked and I don't have a specific color in mind. Rather, I like to try new techniques and will use any excuse.)

This process has been on my list of things to try since reading a couple of articles in Quilting Arts magazine last year and the desire was kicked into high gear when I saw the beautiful fabrics Jules lent us to use during ArtsPark.

The process is pretty simple - soda soak your fabric; scrunch, gather, twist or turn your fabric and layer in container; add layer of ice - crushed or cubes; sprinkle dye powder on ice - repeat until you have either used up all your supplies or you have reached the top of your container. Note - snow can be used in place of ice - but I live in Texas so enough said...

A few things to take into consideration - wear protective gloves when using soda ash; wear a dust mask when dealing with dye powders and spring for a bag or two of ice. Unless you have a separate ice machine at home, the ice bin in your freezer may not hold enough ice to do more than a couple of layers. This is what my attempt looks like after 16 hours. Most of the ice has melted on my three paltry fat quarters. I am excited to see the results after the 24 hour batching. Tomorrow I will buy some ice so I can dye the remaining fat quarters I have soaking in the bucket next to this one.

This event is held at North Park Center and participation is by invitation. We were in great company as there was a plethora of organizations representing various art forms. We shared a curtained wall with KALIGRAFOS , The Dallas Calligraphy Guild (who knew). Many DAFA members are also members of other organizations such as Creative Arts Center of Dallas, The Craft Guild of Dallas, Museum of Geometric and MADI Art so it was nice to see familiar faces. I may be a bit biased - but - I think we had the best looking booth. Lu and I brought a few pieces to share and Jules let us use some of her beautiful hand dyes to decorate our table.
Sneak Peek

Here is a peek at some fabric I have been working on. I love surface design and I love to layer paint, dye, ink and anything else I can get my hands on. The ground is canvas and thus far I have used Golden Fluid Acrylics, Liquitex Acrylics, Adirondike Inks, Setacolor and salt. I am not sure how these pieces will end up - just that I am having fun. One piece will be used in an urban series I am working on and the other in a landscape (maybe).

I'm Camille, the daughter, and I have commandeered this blog for a moment.

I'm proud to say that I am the daughter of an award winning artist! This past weekend was the Dallas Quilt Guild's quilt show and my mother walked away with 2 ribbons.

Perhaps I'm biased, but this is long overdue. For almost 27 years, I've watched my mother pour blood, sweat, and tears into her work, whether it be a quilt for a friend or a fabric post card to send to a friend overseas. And everything in between. I've also seen her bow out of competitions at the last minute because she was afraid to enter pieces for fear of failure. I think this is why this victory, in my eyes, is so sweet. I'm proud of her confidence in her work and I hope this trend of courage continues. She is a true talent with a very unique eye and style.

I know a bunch of you out there have been fans of her work and I want to thank you for your encouragement. I'm familiar with most of your works and it means a lot that artists of your caliber enjoy my mother's art.

Mom,

I love you and I'm so happy for you. I know you've sacrificed a lot for me and I'm so glad that we are at the point where you can live your life doing the things that make you truly happy. Your happiness means the world to me. Congrats on your recent success and I look forward to more awards and recognition in the future!

I have taken several classes in the community college continuing education program and I am excited to share my work. A few weeks ago I volunteered to work the balloon festival hoping to get an opportunity to shoot the morning 'glow'. Unfortunately the glow was cancelled and I decided to make the best of the situation. This is what I saw.

The Yigal Allon Center is the home of the Ancient Galilee Boat. The boat was discovered in 1986 by 2 fishermen during a time of drought and when the water had receded. Based on nails, pottery, other artifacts and carbon dating, the boat dates back to 1 AD. The remains were so delicate, it took twelve days to extricate and another seven years soaking in chemical water and very elaborate conservation before being displayed. The pictures taken inside are somewhat grainy because we were not allow to us flash photography.

She lived in the Baltimore area and was 36 years old. My heart is heavy. Nicole leaves behind her brother John and a family that is in shock and still grieving over the loss of 2 other family members this year. I am grateful and I thank God that I was able to spend time with Nicole in February when we gathered together as a family to say goodbye to Aunt Irene. The last time I saw Nicole, she had lost a lot of weight and I remember teasing her about wearing baggy clothes and maybe she should buy a new wardrobe to show off her new figure. She laughed but didn't say much. My brother remembers her not talking too much about herself and another cousin remembers her being tired during her visit... When it was time for her to leave, we hugged, kissed and promised to stay in touch...I will miss you sweet Nicole.

Two words that made me happy I attended the July guild meeting. Our speaker this month was the vivacious and energetic Lola Jenkins from Oklahoma City. Lola shared her life's journey from millionaire CPA to losing both parents a husband and nearly her own life, to being nursed back to health and losing all CPA knowledge to becoming an award winning quiltmaker. Her stories were filled with humor as she touched on subjects all quilters are familiar with - from buying a second hand sewing machine and not knowing how to use it to recycling thrift store finds into quilt fabrics to faking mitered corners and why the glue stick is one of her favorite tools. She shared that if she had listened to what she calls a 'bubble buster', she never would have entered the Oklahoma State Fair and won first or second place in all thirteen quilt categories in the same year. Lola is not shy and has probably never met a stranger. Her big personality has taken her from interviews with Alex Anderson to an international quilt class with Craftsy. If Lola is ever in your area, her story will keep you entertained.

This is one of roughly 2,000 pictures we took while in Israel. Here, we are in the Dead Sea, covered in mud. We we able to float in two feet of water and this was the first time I was able to float my heavy hips! A little of the water splashed on my face and I have to say, it was the nastiest taste ever and I thought my eyes would never stop burning.
Mom, Cam and I traveled to the Holy Land with 20 other pilgrims. Our guide for the week was Tony, an archaeologist with a PhD. He was a wealth of information and had even worked on some of the sites we visited. He shared so much information and took us to so many places, it will take time to digest and document it all. To show you what a small world we live in, our guide, Tony, attended Boston University - the same school Cam attended! Of all the schools in the world! I look forward to sharing more photos as time goes on.
Dreamerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01836670338383995558noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6707542015498873797.post-3798118679408418872012-04-26T15:00:00.001-05:002012-04-26T15:00:17.817-05:00Catching UpIt has been a busy few weeks. I am taking a photography certificate program and I have been spending quite a bit of time shooting in my community. In the Learning to See Creatively class, the idea is to look at things differently or enhance an everyday object in an artistic way. Each class, we present our assignment and discuss our work as a group. There are some very talented people in the class and I feel I am holding my own. Tomorrow is our last class and I have to admit, I am having a very difficult time finding two 'killer shots'. I think I will use a portrait I of a young family member and who knows what else. Here are a few of my photos:
The closing reception for the annual DAFA Members show was held Monday. Here is a link to a slideshow created of the exhibit. I was the scribe for our juror, Lesli Robertson and listening to her comments on the various pieces, I learned valuable information that I will be able to consider in future work.

Speaking of future work. I created 'Messy Geometry' for the Spirit is Ageless: 2012 Art Contest, Exhibit and Event at The Point, Center for Art and Education. It is a combination of hand dyed cotton, screen printing, fused silk and free motion quilting. I like to use Adirondack Spray Wash as a quick dye. I think the colors are vivid and bright and they have warm colors I am drawn to. I also created the screens used for the grid and dot pattern. The dot pattern was created using a technique I learned in Quilting Arts Magazine. I used sheer fabric, heat set vinyl and two different hole punches. Cam named this piece, the grid reminded her of geometry but nothing really lined up well. It takes me forever to come up with a name that suits the piece. Names usually have to grow on me so a lot of my work is untitled.

This is a juried event and when I am able to attend, I look forward to seeing Jeff Zachman's kinetic sculptures. This year his son,Carl, also an artist, was accepted. You can see the family resemblance. Here are a couple of pictures of the 'side show' activities. Here is a street performer who entertained the children jumping over hurdles and telling stories. There was also a musician playing an instrument from West Africa. I don't remember what he was talking about - however I do remember he played classical music on that thing - beautiful!
This is the first road trip my daughter and I have taken together in years. She agreed to come with me to the International Quilt Festival in Houston.
We had an uneventful drive and spent most of the time counting the 'Buck-ee' reststop billboard sightings. There must be something like 50 billboards along the route and we plan to stop to visit Buck-ee on the way home. We had fun catching up on politics from the perspective of a 20 something vs. a middle aged something.
I terribly underestimated the location of our hotel so we are somewhere off of highway 10, roughly 30 minutes from the convention center. Anyway, we are here.
To our delight, the hotel has a happy hour each evening with 'drink specials' and 'free appetizers'. We decided to partake of the merriment and the entire experience made for great comic relief. We headed to the bar, making our way past what we thought was a closed lunch buffet. In the distance we spotted a buffet table filled with delicious looking finger sandwiches, chicken wings, fresh fruits and vegetables and other tidbits that had us salivating. We decided to start at one end and make our way to the fully stocked bar where we would order a nice blush and enjoy our food. -- That was until a really, really nice waitress quietly came up to us as we picking up our plates and asked if we were 'with the group'. Group? My first thought was - 'we could be' but I decided to keep my mouth shut. Apparently, we walked into a corporate happy hour and the 'closed lunch buffet' we passed when we walked in was for us. These 'free appetizers consisted of left over cheese cubes, a sleeve of crackers, a jar of salted peanuts and a steam tray we were afraid to open. All we could think to do to hide our embarrassment was to quickly hide at the bar and order a drink. Gulp! Slurp! We were done and out of there.
Somewhere in this story is a moral but I will post it later, after I figure out what it is.Dreamerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01836670338383995558noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6707542015498873797.post-31380412077700663142011-09-26T12:54:00.013-05:002011-09-26T14:11:44.728-05:00ATC SwapTonight, the Dallas Area Fiber Artists will have an ATC swap as the mini workshop. Aside from meeting the size requirement of 2 1/2 by 3 1/2 inches, the only other criteria is 50% fabric. I decided to try a technique that is new to me - Discharge Paste mixed with fabric paint. I used a hand dyed piece that I wasn't in love with and added images with a stencil of a butterfly and texture with a couple of text stamps. I then ironed the fabric using lots of steam and the result is a very interesting piece.
I fused it to Peltex, added some thread sketching and cut it to ATC size. A little foil and a backing and I was done. I am very happy with the results. I have an extra piece of discharged fabric that I cannot wait to use. Here are a few pictures - the first one is a shot of the ATCs pinned to my 'design wall'. The 'design wall' in this case was the back of my desk chair - what can I say, it is padded and fabric and the correct height for the fan to reach it to dry the glue.

cut to ATC size and pinned to 'design wall'

after foiling and before treating the edges with black paint

here is the extra piece and what the fabric looked like before stitching and foiling

One of the Employee Resource Groups at my place of employment is sponsoring its second annual art show. My friend Deborah Boschertwho used to reside in Texas and who is a member of the Twisted Stitchers friendship art quilt group, presented the September program for the Dallas Quilters' Guild. She gave a wonder talk on the 12 X 12 Quilt Collaboration project, sharing her inspiration for interpreting the various themes the 'Twelves' were presented with. Here is Deborah with her set of Color Play quilts. Today was the last reveal for the Color Play series. The lower right hand corner is Deborah's interpretation of the color orange - Hibiscus. I like her use of 3 dimensional embellishments and the abstract nature of her work. I always enjoy visiting the 12 X 12 blog on reveal day. To see Deborah's work and the works of the other 'Twelves', you will have to visit the International Quilt Festival in Houston this fall. There is a link to the 12 X 12 blog on the left.

I purchased the quilt top at an estate sale a couple of years ago and my friend Carol Morrisey quilted it for me. The pattern is either a stack and whack or a one block wonder. Either way it is fussy cut from fish fabric. The woman who made the top passed away and her daughter sold off some of the dozens of quilt tops her mother had created. Carol quilted some pebbles and outlined the center designs. It is a nice quilt and I hope it raises enough money to help the recipient family. I will post a picture tomorrow.Dreamerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01836670338383995558noreply@blogger.com0
